How To Break Into Writing The Old-Fashioned Way
Because sometimes, there's something you get from old-fashioned work that can't be obtained otherwise.
Did you ever wonder how some people make a career in major media without the use of Medium or Substack? Well, I can actually provide insight into that as someone who did it back in the day.
I figure I should write this because there are a lot of people who wonder how I got my writing skills, how I marketed myself, and why I still would do freelance work from time to time.
If you want to be an old-school writer, you have to get an in-house job with a company that needs writers. Ideally, that job will be in a magazine, newspaper, or similar publication.
First, why go old school?
I’m of the school of thought that writers can’t work alone. They need another pair of eyes, a guide, or a guru if they want to get somewhere big. Going the “old school” route will put you in an organization with people who are often more successful than you.
Success is contagious. Just being around people can teach you quite a bit about writing, the industry surrounding it, and business skills that you’ll need if you want to go “indie.”
I’ve learned more on the job than I ever did in a degree class. My experience is not unique, either. But, I’ll get into that later on.
